Building My Summer Reading List

Let me explain the insanity going on here. I am going to read a lot this summer. I have decided to read a heapload of books this summer. I’ve already outlined the first few (which is a lot), and have read the first one on my list.
They are:
- Desiring God – John Piper
- Letters to Doubting Thomas - C. Stephen Layman
- Mere Christianity - C.S. Lewis
- The Screwtape Letters – C.S. Lewis
- The Abolition of Man - C.S. Lewis
- The Great Divorce - C.S. Lewis
- The Problem of Pain - C.S. Lewis
- Miracles - C.S. Lewis
- A Grief Observed - C.S. Lewis
- The Silmarillion – J.R.R. Tolkien
So, if anyone has any other suggestions, I’m open. Right now I’m about a quarter through the great philosophical wanderer Letters to Doubting Thomas, an understandable yet scholarly read. Next I will tackle the C.S. Lewis Signature Classics, long overdue. After that will most likely be the Silmarillion, a book I’ve always wanted to read.
Any other ideas? I will be giving you updates as I continue down the road. I’m open to anything good, but I prefer theology, philosophy, and adventure. I hate crap books.

The Silmarillion is awesome.
I would suggest other things, but it sounds like you’ve got your hands full.
The only thing I’ll suggest is Flannery O’Connor’s short stories. She should be required reading for every literary-minded Christian.

Any specific recommendations? The list isn’t set.. I may reorganize it, and any suggestions will just add into the queue that will continue into the school year maybe.

For Flannery, my suggestions are thus: The River, A Good Man is Hard to Find, The Lame Shall Enter First, The Life You Save May Be Your Own, Parker’s Back, and Revelation. All of them are about 20 pages long, and are wonderful. Her novels, Wise Blood and The Violent Bear it Away are also excellent, though underrated.

George MacDonald. I can hook you up.
Although beware, he is a universalist of sorts.
